Founder-Led to Scaled Growth
The most meaningful growth opportunities often emerge during periods of change. SheaMoisture was no longer a fast-growing founder-led brand. It was now part of a global organization navigating the realities of scale, retail expectations, and evolving consumer needs. The opportunity was not simply growing sales. it was to preserve what made the brand meaningful while unlocking its next chapter of growth.
Purpose-Led Growth

SheaMoisture entered a new phase following its acquisition. While the brand maintained strong consumer loyalty, growth became more complex. Retailers expected greater scale and consistency, consumers expected authenticity, and operational challenges post-acquisition created additional pressure. The tension was clear: how could the brand continue to grow without losing the trust and cultural relevance that made it successful in the first place?
-
The strategy started by bringing everyone together around a common goal. Consumer insights, retailer priorities, and business objectives were aligned to create a shared growth plan. The focus was on creating authentic moments of discovery based on the Target shopper. The 3-year strategy included Target exclusive tentpole activations that connected the multicultural consumer and Target’s promise of doubling down on the Black guest.

The strategy delivered $11.5 million in incremental sales, secured 13% shelf expansion, expanded off-shelf placements, and established SheaMoisture as the #1 Textured Hair brand and #2 Total Hair brand at Target. More importantly, it demonstrated that purpose, partnership, and the founders ‘why’ can coexist post-acquisition when growth is built on a foundation of authenticity and trust.
